The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the standardised test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. IELTS was established in 1989 and since then hundreds of thousands of students have studied for and completed IELTS.
IELTS examination lasts for 2 hours and 45 minutes. The exam focuses on four main core skills and assessment areas. These assessment areas include listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. The test is scored in an easy-to-understand 9 band scale.
Check out our 4 top preparation tips for IELTS students:
1. Practice, practice, practice
Find as many sample practice papers as you can and complete the mock exams. At first, you can familiarise yourself with the IELTS test and then as you become better at the tests, you can time yourself.
2. Prioritise your time
Prioritise your time depending on your strengths and weaknesses. If you struggle with speaking more than writing English, you should spend more time practicing your speaking skills. For example, if you have 5 hours a week of independent learning, you could assign:
- 2 hours for speaking
- 1 hour for listening
- 1 hour for writing
- 1 hour for reading.
3. Ask for help
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you are stuck on something and need help, ask your teacher. Your teacher will answer any questions about the IELTS exam you might have.
4. Switch up your learning style
Keep your learning fun and interesting. This will help you remember the content. Try watching your favourite film or TV show in English with subtitles, or listen to English music. Or you could even play some ESL games.

It’s officially festive season!
There are three things that define Dublin: its impressive literary heritage, rich history, and a universal love for good craic.
Halloween has long been associated with indulgence: every year, supermarkets stock up on spooky editions of our favourite snacks and children go door to door in the hopes of filling up their pockets with chocolate eyeballs and candy pumpkins.
