Explore Greenwich: 7 Things to Do Near Our London English Centre

A view of Canary Wharf, from Greenwich Park

Our London centre in the Royal Borough of Greenwich is the perfect base for exploring the city’s most iconic landmarks, from Big Ben and the London Eye to the theatres of the West End. Surrounded by green, leafy areas and only a few minutes’ walk from the Thames, Greenwich is not only a peaceful escape from London’s hustle and bustle – it’s also packed with history, character, and plenty to do.

Whether you’re strolling through one of the city’s oldest royal parks or perusing the stalls of Greenwich Market, here are 7 things to do between English classes – all without passing a single train barrier!

Greenwich Park, overlooking Canary Wharf

1) Greenwich Park

10 minutes' walk

With sweeping views over London’s skyline, Greenwich Park contains centuries of history to discover. Crowned one of London’s official royal parks in 1433, it covers 183 hectares of flower gardens, wild deer, and ancient woodland. It’s also the home of time itself – almost. You’ll find the Prime Meridian Line at the Royal Observatory, where you can stand with one foot in the Eastern Hemisphere and the other in the West.

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich

2) The National Maritime Musem

15 minutes' walk

Explore London’s naval history for free at the National Maritime Museum, the world’s largest museum of seafaring. Marvel at the journal of Edward Barlow, a 17th-century seaman who chronicled life at sea, or view an authentic pocket watch recovered from the Titanic. The museum’s most recent exhibition takes visitors through the myths and realities of one of history’s most fabled characters: pirates.

3) Riverside Cafes and Restaurants

15 minutes' walk

Being right by the Thames means plenty of places to relax and enjoy some al fresco dining. The River Gardens Café is only a short walk away, with an array of classic British bakes and a light lunch menu. Alternatively, stroll over to the quintessentially British Trafalgar Tavern for traditional fish and chips and lots of charm. On a budget?

Pack a picnic and head to the Greenwich pier area for riverside views and people-watching.

The Painted Hall, Greenwich, often called Britain's Sistine Chapel

4) The Painted Hall

15 minutes' walk

Feeling inspired by the Maritime Museum’s pirate exhibit? Follow in the footsteps of Captain Jack Sparrow at The Painted Hall, where he once swung from a chandelier in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Nicknamed ‘Britain’s Sistine Chapel’, the hall is located in Greenwich’s Old Royal Naval College and was originally built as a dining hall for Pensioners and Naval Officers. Today, it’s one of London’s hidden cultural gems and star in its own right, with appearances in Bridgerton, The Crown, and Ridley Scott’s Napoleon.

Greenwich Market, which has been in the town for over 200 years

5) Greenwich Market

20 minutes' walk

Trading since the 14th century, Greenwich market is a constant bustle of activity. Here you’ll find everything from antiques and art to vintage clothes and rare books. Not to mention the market’s huge variety of international street foods: think indulgent Korean corn dogs, mini Dutch pancakes, and spicy chai. Whatever you’re craving, you’ll find under Greenwich Market’s historic roof.

Greenwich's Cutty Sark, a tea clipper

6) The Cutty Sark

20 minutes' walk

Ever had afternoon tea under the hull of an old ship? Look no further than the Cutty Sark, where you can step back in time on Greenwich’s own 19th century tea clipper, the fastest ship of its day. Tour the boat’s cabins, cargo hold, and main deck before settling down for some tea and cake in the museum café, located directly beneath the ship’s towering hull.

The O2, located in North Greenwich

7) The O2

30 minutes' walk

Our London students are lucky enough to be within walking distance of the O2 Arena – one of the world’s top entertainment venues. Catch some of the biggest music artists, grab a bite at one of the many restaurants, or follow in James Bond’s footsteps with ‘Up at the O2’, a thrilling rooftop climb with panoramic views over London.
